Design Technology
Intent
At Helmsley Community Primary School, our vision is that our Design and Technology curriculum will allow children to thrive in a rapidly changing world, by encouraging them to become independent, creative problem solvers. Our children will develop their understanding of the technological world and be inspired by past and present designs and technologies that have influenced modern society. Our children will use their imagination and creativity to design, make and evaluate a range of products, with clear purposes and within a variety of contexts. Our DT curriculum is delivered through our Key Concepts: Design, Make, Evaluate, Technical Knowledge and Cooking and Nutrition.
Our intent is for children to have:
- Good levels of originality and the willingness to take creative risks to produce innovative ideas and prototypes.
- An excellent attitude to learning as part of a team or thinking as an individual.
- A passion for the subject and knowledge of up-to-date technological innovations in materials, products and systems.
- The ability to use time efficiently and work constructively and productively with others.
- The ability to carry out research, show initiative and ask questions to develop an exceptionally detailed knowledge of the purpose and users’ needs.
- The skills to be responsible designers and makers, working ethically, using finite materials carefully and working safely.
- A good knowledge of which tools, equipment and materials to use to make their products.
- The ability to apply mathematical knowledge.
- The ability to manage risks to manufacture products safely and hygienically
Implementation
- In EYFS, we provide children with a wide range of construction equipment to explore with both indoors and outdoors through a play-based curriculum. The children use a range of tools, including scissors, paintbrushes and cutlery, to develop fine motor skills. They explore a range of malleable materials including sand, rice, water and clay. Children are given opportunities to create with a wide variety of materials, tools and techniques, as they experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function.
- In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 the children complete DT projects following the learning sequence of design, make and evaluate.
- Children are taught the technical knowledge and vocabulary linked to their project.
- Each project links to an inspiring design, product or designer, which the children research and explore in relation to their design brief.
- Our DT Journals reflect what is taught and show the children’s journey through the project.
