Art and Design

Intent

Be inspired, experiment, create

Our aim is to engage and inspire all children through creative opportunities. We believe that Art and Design encourages children to develop their creativity, nurture their imagination and provides children with a variety of ways to express their thoughts, feelings and emotions. We aim to give all children the confidence to express themselves through a range of chosen mediums. Our children are given the opportunities to experiment with a range of different materials, to use drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, textiles and sculpting techniques to bring their ideas to life, and to practise art and design techniques when using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. As the children progress, they will be encouraged to progress their skills through experimentation and developing their control and finesse.

We want our children to know how Art & Design has contributed to our culture and understanding of our history and the world. Our children will focus on a variety of key artists linked to their topics and they will begin to understand the development of their particular art forms.

Our intent is for children to have:

  • The ability to use elements of art (for example, line, shape, pattern, colour, texture, form) to express emotions, interpret observations and share individuality.
  • The ability to communicate in visual and tactile ways.
  • The ability to create confidently and adventurously from observation, memory and imagination.
  • The ability to explore, invent, develop and deconstruct ideas.
  • A knowledge and understanding of other artists, craft makers and designers.
  • The ability to select and use materials, processes and techniques skillfully and inventively.
  • The ability to reflect on, analyse and evaluate their own work and that of others.
  • a continuing love of Art and Design

Implementation

  • In EYFS, we provide children with a wide range of materials and equipment to explore both indoors and outdoors through a play-based curriculum. The children use a range of tools, including scissors, paintbrushes and cutlery, to develop fine motor skills. They explore a range of malleable materials including sand, rice, water and clay. Children are given opportunities to create with a wide variety of materials, tools and techniques, as they experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function. Children develop their pencil grip as they develop their care and accuracy when drawing.
  • In Year 1 to 6, our Art long term plan is influenced by the Suffolk Art Scheme, where specific artistic skills are taught discretely. Over the year, children experience; drawing, painting, printing, collage, sculpture and textiles, alongside developing a knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists.
  • Each child has their own sketchbook to design, practise and develop their skills and artworks.
  • Art lessons are carried out weekly, focussing on a particular artistic skill or technique.
  • Lessons are taught as a sequence where children build upon the knowledge and skills to create a final piece.
  • Children are given opportunities to experiment and explore their ideas through discussions, sketchbook work and collaborative pieces.
  • Additional art work and craft activities are planned to link to our topic-based curriculum or celebrate and recognise local and national events.
  • Children develop an understanding of art’s role in our culture and history through studying various national and international artists and their influences on the wider world. Local artists are also explored to enhance children’s learning.
